This folk fish fortune teller is based on the "miracle fish” novelty toy; when the fish comes into contact with moisture, say from a hand, it causes the fish to curl or move. In Scottish folklore, soothsayers, or seers, were individuals believed to have the ability to predict the future.
In keeping with advocacy for indigenous oral histories, this fish is also an ode to the Scotland’s Gutter Girls, a migratory workforce of women employed to gut and pack herring as it landed on piers around Scotland 1900-1950. They followed the fish around the British Isles with rich hopes and wild experiences which were largely undocumented relative to the industry itself.
